The College of the Rockies Avalanche Men's Volleyball Program is excited to announce the signing of Cole Brandsma, a 6'6" outside hitter from Chilliwack, British Columbia, who will join the team for the 2026–2027 PACWEST season. Brandsma brings a wealth of experience to the Avalanche, having previously competed for three seasons with the UBC Thunderbirds, along with his development at Abbotsford Christian School and Fraser Valley Volleyball Club.
An accomplished athlete with experience at the highest levels of the Canadian game, Brandsma has represented both the Youth National Team and Junior National Team, while also achieving significant success throughout his high school and club career. He was named High School Provincial MVP in 2018 and helped lead his team to a provincial silver medal in 2017 and a provincial gold medal in 2018. At the club level, he earned a U16 Provincial Gold Medal (2017) and a U18 National Bronze Medal (2018), further establishing himself as a high-impact player.
Brandsma shared that the opportunity to continue his volleyball career while pursuing a hands-on academic path—and doing so alongside family—made the decision an easy one. "The ability to do trade school and play volleyball together, and to play with my brothers, made this an opportunity I couldn't pass up," said Brandsma.
Head Coach Cisco Farrero emphasized the significance of adding a player of Brandsma's experience and leadership to the roster. "Cole choosing to continue his post-secondary volleyball journey at COTR is huge for our program," said Farrero. "He is an accomplished and experienced outside hitter, having used three years at UBC, and will be bringing top-end athleticism and a highly-developed game to our gym. Cole's leadership and calm presence will be great for our younger athletes, and I'm really excited to have the opportunity to coach someone of Cole's caliber and maturity. Cole has high expectations for himself and I can't wait to get him in our gym to push for another PACWEST title."
At College of the Rockies, Brandsma will enroll in the Automotive Service Technician program, aligning his academic goals with his passion for the automotive and trades industry.
Brandsma becomes a major addition to the Avalanche's 2026/27 recruiting class, joining his brothers Finn and Luc Brandsma as the program continues to build a competitive and experienced roster for the upcoming season.
